Motorola Mobility has issued a regulatory filing outlining the loss of 800 jobs. The cut will cost the handset manufacturer $31 million -- that number includes $27 million in severance and $4 million to close locations. 

The reason for the cuts? Bloomberg suggests that it's part of an attempt to lower costs, as the company readies itself to join the Google family -- a decision Motorola's board will vote on in the middle of next month. This news follows last week's earnings report, in which the mobile company reported a $32 million net loss -- not the greatest financial report, sure, but a marked improvement over the prior quarter's $56 million loss.

Who's Hiring Temporary Seasonal Workers

  • FedEx plans to hire 20,000 seasonal workers to help handle holiday shipments at FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx SmartPost nationwide.  Check out the companies jobs at FedEx Jobs 411.
  • QVC plans on hiring approximately 3,700 new seasonal workers this year at its distribution and contact centers. The shopping network says it also plans to hire an additional 250 permanent jobs before the end of 2011. Hiring is currently under way, see QVC's offerings at QVC Jobs 411.
  • Kohl's department store will hire an additional 40,000 temporary workers in 2011, up approximately 5% from last year. The company also plans on hiring approximately 2,500 seasonal positions at distribution centers and more than 500 seasonal and full-time credit operations positions, which handle online orders.   • Toys R Us plans to hire between 35,000 and 45,000 seasonal workers. Hiring for staff in stores and distribution centers is underway and expected to continue through November. Interested job seekers should check out Toys R US Jobs 411.

Jobless rates up in 26 states, down in 12 in Aug; payroll jobs down in 30 states, up in 20

The latest Regional and State Employment and Unemployment (Monthly) news release has been posted on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website at http://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/laus.pdf and also archived at http://www.bls.gov/news.release/archives/laus_09162011.pdf. Brief highlights are presented below.

In August, 26 states and the District of Columbia reported over-the-month unemployment rate increases, 12 had decreases, and 12 had no change. Nonfarm payroll employment decreased in 30 states and the district and increased in 20 states.

Over the year, 25 states experienced statistically significant changes in employment, 24 of which were increases. The largest increase occurred in Texas (+253,200), followed by California (+171,300), New York (+83,400), Ohio (+80,300), and Michigan (+79,800).

African-American Jobs Catastrophe, Joblessness Highest Since 1984

The August jobs report was bleak: Employers added no net jobs and the unemployment rate stayed at 9.1 percent. This is the bleakest jobs report since September 2010 and has resurrected fears that the economy may degrade into another recession. 

This certainly classifies as a crisis for America, but perhaps most disturbing in the numbers was the jobs catastrophe facing the minority community.

While the unemployment rate for whites fell slightly to 8%, Latinos saw their unemployment rate remain unchanged at 11.3% and Black unemployment surged to 16.7%, its highest level since 1984.

Overall, black men were hit the hardest, with joblessness at a staggeringly high 19.1%, compared to 14.5% for black women and 8.9% for latino men.

Brief Review of the Bureau of Labor Statistics July 2011 Jobless Rates Report

US Bureau of Labor Statistics
Unemployment rates were lower in July than a year earlier in 257 of the 372 metropolitan areas, higher in 94 areas, and unchanged in 21 areas, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Twelve areas recorded jobless rates of at least 15.0 percent, while ten areas registered rates of less than 5.0 percent. Two hundred thirty-two metropolitan areas reported over-the-year increases in nonfarm payroll jobs, 133 reported decreases, and 7 had no change. The national jobless rate in July was 9.3 percent, not seasonally adjusted, down from 9.7 percent a year earlier.

The highest jobless rates in July were recorded by El Centro, CA* (30.8%) and Yuma, AZ* (30%).

Bismarck, ND* registered the lowest jobless rate, 3.0 percent. The areas with the next lowest rates were Fargo, ND* (3.7%) and Lincoln, NE* (3.8%).
 
The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment among the large metropolitan areas were reported in Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, MA*, and Lowell-Billerica-Chelmsford, MA-NH* (+2.4% each), Dallas-Plano-Irving, TX* (+2.3%), and Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, WA (+2.2%). The largest over-the-year percentage decreases in employment were in Gary, IN* (-2.5 percent), Wilmington, DE-MD-NJ* (-1.8%), Edison-New Brunswick, NJ* (-1.4%) and Nassau-Suffolk, NY* (-0.6%).

The first thing most people think of when they think of online job search is Monster, or Craigslist, or HotJobs or Careerbuilder.
